If you are noticing that your cat is not responding when you call her, she could just be choosing to ignore you, or, there is that possibility that your cat is going deaf in both ears, or perhaps even just one. Cat deafness can be caused by quite a number of reasons. Trauma, a foreign object in the ear, reaction to medications, earwax building up, and infection, are just some of the possible causes. There are cases where deafness is treatable and reversible. However, if the cat’s deafness is congenital, it is non-reversible. White cats are the ones commonly afflicted. One in five white cats has this variety of deafness. Also, blue-eyed white cats have a higher probability of having the problem. Experts have determined that the genetic material that affects hair coat and eye color also affects ear functionality. Therefore, lacking eye and hair pigments can potentially be related to being deaf in cats that are white. If you have seen cats that have two different colored eyes, for example, one being blue the other of a different color, the deafness is usually in the ear where the blue-colored eye is. If the cause of deafness is genetic, then it is not reversible.
