Have You Heard Your Kitty Grinding His Teeth ?

Tooth grinding is called “bruxism” and it is common in cats. Here are some of the reasons for cats to engage in such behavior:

Mouth Problems and other related structures – some of these issues include gum and teeth problems, injury, abscess, a foreign object stuck in the mouth, etc. resulting in bruxism. One of the prominent symptoms of bruxism in cats is drooling. If it is possible, try to check your cat’s mouth for decaying or broken teeth, wounds, inflammation of gums, sores, etc.

Food – other than oral problems, bruxism is one way for cats to inform their owner of issues regarding their diet. If this happens, try to switch your cat’s food to premium canned food and see if she stops that kind of behavior.

Dehydration – cats have finicky drinking behavior and are prone to being dehydrated. Try to follow ways that encourage your cat to drink an adequate amount of water. Bear in mind that dehydration is fatal is not addressed appropriately.
