Hamster Care

Has your child been begging for a hamster? These little guys are very popular beginner pets, in part because they are so easy to care for. They only live about 3 years, on average, and are very cute and docile. While there are several kinds of hamsters, the Syrian is the one most popularly kept as a pet. If you are getting one for a child, you’ll need to consider the fact that hamsters are nocturnal, and may keep your little one awake.

A good cage is going to go a long way toward keeping your hamster happy and comfortable. YOu can get an aquarium with a mesh or wire top, or a wire cage with a solid bottom. You’ll need to add proper substrate, toys, bedding, food and water dishes, a solid exercise wheel, and at least one hidey-hole or house.

As far as diet, you can offer commercial food for main meals, supplemented with meat, eggs, crickets, mealworms, and even peanut butter.

Ask your local vet clinic Savannah, GA for more tips on hamster care.
