Foods To Avoid Feeding Your Rabbits

A rabbit’s diet consists of hay and vegetables, but it is okay to feed your rabbit pellets so long as they are taken in small amounts.

Commercial pellets are not a very good substitute for green, leafy foods. You can easily overfeed your bunny thinking more pellets would make them less hungry, but it does not make your rabbit feel full like hay does, and pellets do not satiate a rabbit's hunger enough. Pellets are high in calories as well and can make your bunny obese.

Unlike hay, pellets can cause poor dental care to bunny teeth. If a bunny does not satisfy its habit of chewing, it might contribute to behavioral issues. Commercial pellets do not contain water in them. Since rabbits are not avid water drinkers, less liquid intake could result in urinary tract diseases. It is best if pellets only occupy at least 10% or less of your rabbit's diet.

Here are some other foods your rabbits should avoid:

  • Starchy and fatty food

  • Beans

  • Bread

  • Cereals

  • Chocolate

  • Corn

  • Nuts

  • Oats

  • Peas

  • Refined sugar

  • Wheat

  • Seeds

As much as possible, avoid feeding your rabbit anything heavy like grains. There is no need for them to intake vitamins or nutrient supplements if your rabbit is healthy and if they are well fed. It could lead to serious health problems if you give them supplements or vitamins more than what their body needs.
