Flatulence is the buildup of excessive gas in the abdomen, usually expelled by farting. Some signs of flatulence include a rumbling noise from the stomach, bloating, and frequent passing of gas through the anus, which may or may not have a foul odor. Not only humans experience flatulence, but dogs as well. The common reasons for flatulence in pet dogs are poor digestion and eating spoiled food. Some foods cause gas formation, such as beans, peas, cauliflower, spicy foods, and milk products. Dogs that are lactose intolerant tend to suffer from flatulence. Dogs that eat quickly are also prone to gas buildup as they swallow lots of air while eating. In treating flatulence, a veterinarian may conduct diagnostic tests to determine the cause of flatulence. Usually, a change in diet is necessary even for dogs that eat premium-quality pet food. As for dogs that eat rapidly, veterinarians recommend giving small meals within the day.
Any change in your pet’s appetite and/or eating habits should require an appointment with your animal clinic Smyrna, GA.
