Flat-Coated Retriever Hair Coat

The coat of Flat-Coated Retrievers is straight and moderately long. It serves as the dog's protection from the water, weather, and ground covers. The hairs on their fronts, chests, ears, forelegs, and tails are longer— which is called feathering. Meanwhile, the hairs on their thighs— which also serve as protections) shouldn't be too long. Male Flat-Coats have mane (long, heavy coats on the neck). Lastly, Flat-Coats may come in solid black or liver.

Maintenance is easy with this breed— weekly brushing will do when they're not shedding. During shedding season, brushing should be done every day to control the number of dog hairs at home. Hairs on the feet, ears, tail tips, and bellies can be trimmed, and bathing is done only when necessary.

Training should start ASAP. These fast learners are eager to please, but these sensitive dogs don't do well with harsh corrections. Training with consistency, kindness, and positive reinforcement (plays, foods, and praises) is a better alternative.
