Feeding Cats Separately

In multi-cat households, the cats often eat their meals together. But there are instances when there is a need to feed them separately, such as in the following situations--

  • A cat with a medical problem needs to be placed on a special diet

  • Obese or overweight cats that are on a weight-loss diet

  • Resource guarding issues that cause fighting over food

  • One of the cats need to take medication that is mixed into his food

  • Cats have various ages/life stages

So how should these cats be fed separately without causing any problems?

  • Try feeding your furballs in different rooms and be sure to close the doors while they’re eating.

  • Feed cats in the same room but do so at different times. Other cats should not be allowed access to the room when a cat is eating.

  • Use baby gates to divide one room so your cats can eat at the same time without having any access to the food of other cats.

  • Place your cats on different levels during feeding time. You can put a younger cat on a shelf or table while the older one’s food bowl is placed on the floor.

Before making changes in your pet’s diet, always contact with your veterinarian Frisco, TX.
