The perfect diet for your turtle depends on its size, breed, health condition, age, and preference. Since most turtles are omnivores, they can eat meat, plants, vegetables, and fruits. However, some species are herbivores so they prefer to eat nothing but plants.
The jaw structure of many turtle species indicates their diet, for example, green sea turtles have fine saw- like jaws. This is why these turtles are herbivores that feed on plants only. As they age, they also feed on sponges and jellyfish. At the same time, Loggerheads have jaws that are well-adapted for crushing and grinding, thus, they feed on shellfish, mollusks, and crabs.
Other turtles like the Leatherbacks have delicate scissor-like jaws that can be damaged by anything other than their usual diet of jellyfish and other soft-bodied animals. Because of this, you must know what type of turtle you are going to have to make sure you are giving them the right food.
A sudden change in your pet appetite and/or eating habits should prompt a visit to your animal clinic Derby.
