Ear Mite In Dogs

Ear mites are parasites that invade the ears of dogs and cause itching, buildup of debris and ear wax, that eventually lead to inflammation. There are different types of ear mites. The one that affects dogs is Otodectes cynotis. They are very tiny and can be clearly seen under a microscope. They invade the ear canal where the adult ear mites lay eggs. When the eggs hatch, the mites feed on the ear wax and skin tissues in the ear canal. Ear mites from an infected dog can easily transfer to other dogs. Fortunately, this type of ear mites doesn’t affect humans. But there have been cases when human exposure to ear mites causes the development of a mild skin rash on the arms, legs, and other parts of the body. Dogs with ear mites often shake their head, scratch at their ears using their feet, and there may be debris that look like coffee grounds along the ear canal. Persistent scratching at the ears can eventually lead to hair loss. A dog can develop hematoma due to persistent head-shaking or violent scratching of the ear.

If you notice your dog exhibiting the aforementioned symptoms, do schedule an appointment with your animal hospital Bucks County, PA.
