Dog Breed Profile: Lancashire Heeler

Lancashire Heelers used to spend their days driving livestock to the market and hunting rabbits and rats in their home country of Britain. These days, these dogs have evolved into excellent companion dogs. These pups look like the Corgis, which also happen to be their cousins. Generally, Lancashire Heelers are mischievous, stubborn, and intelligent, so training them can be hard— owners should be experienced enough. When their needs are met, Heelers can be the most loving, playful, loyal family dogs.

They have a history of driving livestock to market, and their short height makes it easy to nip at animals' heels to keep them going. They also have enough agility to leap when livestock attempt to kick them. Another task they excel at is catching rabbits/rats on farmlands.

They look like Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis— only that Heelers have black-and-tan color, which indicates they may be related to Manchester Terriers. These pups are popular companions, show dogs, as well as obedience/agility competitors in Great Britain. They can also do herding trials.
