Does Hibernation Benefit Your Pet Hamster ?

Hamsters are not supposed to hibernate because it is not a safe state to be in for an extended time. But if the environment they are in becomes worse for them, then hibernation might be the only option.

How long does a hamster hibernate?

Most of the time, hamsters will only be in hibernation for two to three days. That said, if the animal does not consume food or water, has little light or warmth, then it might stay hibernating longer. And the longer a hamster stays in hibernation, then the more in danger it is in.

How can you determine if your pet hamster is about to hibernate?

There are various means of determining if your pet hamster is about to hibernate. If you see that it has slowed down its breathing compared to the usual or if it becomes limp when you handle it, it could mean that the animal is hibernating. Your hamster could also feel somewhat colder to the touch than usual.

If you have concerns about your pet's health and/or behavior, make an appointment with your local pet clinic Louisville KY.
