Chocolate Poisoning In Dogs

As pet owners, we are aware of the harmful effect of chocolate on your pet dog. But you may not be aware that the risk of eating chocolate will depend on the type and amount eaten. Your dog’s size will also affect the aftermath of chocolate.

A piece of chocolate becomes poisonous because it contains theobromine. This is a molecule that is similar to caffeine, it will increase the flow of blood going to the brain. Your pet dog will not be able to process the blood flow. This is the reason why you should not give chocolate to your pooch.

Dogs will also appear to be poisoned when they eat chocolates. They might vomit or get diarrhea. There are other worse symptoms if your dog ate a lot of chocolate.

Poisoning from chocolate occurs when dogs ate about 20 milligrams. If a dog is less than 5 kilograms, he will get poisoned if he consumes about 70 grams of milk chocolate or 20 grams of dark chocolate. Cocoa powder contains more theobromine than a bar of regular chocolate.

If your pet has eaten chocolate, you should make an appointment with veterinary health center Derby immediately even if signs of toxicity are not manifested.
