There are several potential causes of acne in cats. Sometimes, poor grooming is predisposing factor. But it could also be triggered by a skin allergy, a fungal or mite infestation. Acne in cats are usually found on their chin where larger sebaceous glands are congregated. The secretion of these glands, known as sebum, are used by cats for scent marking. Sebum also keeps the cat’s hair coat shiny and healthy. Sometimes the sebaceous glands become overactive and produce excessive amounts of sebum, or hair follicles become blocked. When this happens, there will be buildup of sebum on the hair of the chin make the area appear dark and greasy. You may then notice the presence of what appears to be blackheads which are actually the blocked hair follicles or comedones. Soon, bacteria are drawn to the comedones and cause infection resulting in acne.
