The main function of a cat’s liver is to produce chemicals needed for digestion and detoxification. Cats that are losing weight due to poor diet or illness often experience the body taking fat reserves and sending them to the liver for processing into protein producing energy. The overload on the liver, however, can cause it to stop functioning. This is what is known as fatty liver disease. The main causes of the disease are not known although malnourishment appears to be a key starter. Undernourishment is not always clear as some cats may still be on the same diet with no eating problems. Some experts believe that fatty liver disease can be caused by diabetes, pancreatitis, kidney disease, and other liver diseases could be to blame. You will need to take your cat in to the animal hospital Derby for an examination to determine the cause of the illness and the extent of the illness.
