Cats and Loose Change

It’s important to keep loose change away from pets especially cats and dogs. Cats may become curious with the shiny object and accidentally eat it and swallow it. If this happens, call your vet. Most likely x-rays will need to be taken to determine if the coin should be removed and how. This could cause possible damage to the digestive tract and intestines. There is also the potential for toxins from the coin to harm your cat. Pennies, for instance, were primarily made of copper before 1982, which is not toxic. However, pennies made after 1982 are coated with copper and primarily made from zinc, which is highly toxic. Zinc poisoning could have symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea, blood in urine, yellow mucous, liver and kidney failure and anemia. Notify your vets Monticello, NY if your cat swallows any type of loose change especially if you know it was pennies.
