Cat Grooming Tips - Brushing Your Cat's Hair

Cats, regardless of whether they are short-haired or long-haired, will benefit from regular hair brushing. Using the right grooming tools, you will free your pet’s hair coat of dirt, grease, debris, and loose or dead hair. Brushing also helps remove flakes and skin cells that have been shed-off as well as stimulate blood circulation. It is enough to say that brushing promotes skin and hair coat health.

Before brushing your pet’s hair, you should make a habit of checking all over your cat’s body for any lumps or bumps, bald patches, or signs of parasite infestation (fleas and ticks). For short-haired cats, use a metal comb to remove dirt and debris. Brush in the direction of the hair coat’s growth. Make sure to brush every inch of your pet’s body, concentrating on one area at a time. Use a rubber brush to remove dead hair. For long-haired cats, brushing should be done every day to prevent hair from tangling and forming mats. They may need to be brushed several times a day when it’s shedding season. If you find knots, sprinkle some talcum powder over them and gently tease the hairs apart using your fingers. Use a mat-splitter for stubborn knots.
