Can Dogs Get A Concussion?

Even with tough skulls, canines can suffer from concussions. These cases, however, are quite rare with the warning signs relatively similar to what is seen in humans. And since it is unfortunate that dogs are not able to answer questions directly about what it is they are experiencing or feeling, it is more difficult to diagnose a concussion in canines.

In the field of veterinary medicine, the technical term for a concussion is ‘traumatic brain injury’, or TBI. The common TBI causes when it comes to dogs are a hit to the head from a hard blunt object, kicks from cattle or a horse, getting into fights with other dogs, a vehicle accident, or crashing/bumping into something hard, among others. The concussion’s severity will produce different symptoms displayed. If your dog loses consciousness, immediately take him to the animal hospital. Some other possible symptoms include having a difficult time keeping their balance, bleeding nose, getting disoriented, eye movements that seem unusual, seizures, vomiting, and abnormally constricted or dilated pupils.

Any sign of illness exhibited by your pet should prompt a visit to your animal hospital San Antonio, TX.
