Bringing Your Small Pet Home

Small pets like cavies, rabbits, and rats make great first-time furry friends for youngsters. Establishing sensible guidelines is crucial in building a healthy, safe, and happy relationship between pets and children.

Before giving them to your child, let the animal adjust in a few days first. During this time, let your kid talk to their pet, feed them, and pet them. Never force their relationship— let the pet hide if they want and simply wait for them to come around.

Adult supervision is vital, even if it's your kid's pet. The animal's comfort depends on how stressed they are. Speaking softly and gently moving is essential, and your child should also be able to teach their friends to do it, too.

Out-of-the-cage time should be under adult supervision. Rodents shouldn't be allowed on high surfaces to avoid falling. Kids should be active in taking care of them— let them help in cage cleaning and other responsibilities.

If your pet is showing any signs of illness, make an appointment with your veterinary care center Wichita, KS.
