Booster Shots And How Often Cats Should Receive Them

It’s been common practice for some cat owners to administer booster vaccines on a yearly basis. But there has been little evidence to support the practice. Studies have shown how there is little to no benefit from booster shots. Moreover, booster shots depend on factors such as type of vaccine, the health status of animals, and lifestyle. Some vaccines offer sufficient protection of up to 3 years – which is the case with viral vaccines. With bacterial vaccines, however, an annual booster is needed to improve the animal’s immunity against the disease.

A lifestyle risk assessment is usually conducted before any recommendation for a full booster series is implemented. Nevertheless, boosters for adult cats that received complete vaccines as kittens can be administered one to three years. For example, cats deemed as low-risk (especially indoor-only cats) and have received full vaccination. At the same time, kittens can opt for booster shots every three years for core vaccines: rabies, feline calicivirus, feline panleukopenia, and feline viral rhinotracheitis). Other booster shots deemed non-core by a veterinarian, such as those for Bordetella, feline infectious peritonitis, or chlamydia, can be administered if found necessary after performing an antibody titer test.
