Allergies in Dogs

An allergy is the body’s reaction in which the immune system fights off an allergen, a substance perceived as a threat. Not only humans can get allergy but pet dogs, too. Allergens come from various sources.

The environment is a primary source of allergy to pets. A sensitive dog experiences an allergic reaction when it breathes in pollen or dust. Allergy to pollens and dust can be seasonal but can cause sneezing, runny nose, and coughing.

Food is another source of allergy. There are certain foods and food ingredients that can trigger an allergic reaction. A dog has a food allergy when it experiences gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting and diarrhea. Dogs with food allergy also suffer from itchy skin.

Some dogs are also allergic to flea bites. A reaction occurs when the flea saliva comes in contact with the dog’s skin. Skin allergy symptoms include rashes, itchiness, and redness.

If your pet is displaying symptoms of allergy, visit your vet Carolina Forest, SC immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment. Visit this website Waccamaw Regional Veterinary Center and make an appointment.
