What Is De-Sexing In Cats?

De-sex refers to a surgical procedure of removing the reproductive system of an animal. To be specific, neutering is the term for removing a male cat’s reproductive organs. Spaying refers to the removal of the female cat’s reproductive system. De-sexing is usually done during puberty. This procedure is done on cats to keep them safe and prevent them from displaying unwanted behaviors.

A male cat that is not de-sexed will always want to wander about as he searches for a mate. Female cats will also be in search of a mate when they are in heat. However, male cats would most likely get in fights with other cats to get the attention of a potential mate. Thus, male cats would likely get would and cuts from all these fights. These open wounds could lead to infection and other diseases.

In addition, a de-sexed cat will no longer produce offensive-smelling urine. The female cat will have a lesser chance of getting an infection in the uterus. Male cats will also be free from prostate problems.

If you have any questions and/or concerns about the procedure, don’t hesitate to talk to your veterinarian Marietta, GA about them.
